If you know me or follow me on social media you probably saw me freaking out about being in the July / August issue of Country Living Magazine. It’s still pretty surreal and ridiculously exciting for this soccer mom in Idaho! I have had a few people ask how I ended up being featured so I thought I would write a quick post about it.
Let me start by saying, if it wasn’t for Instagram it would have never happened. That is where I first posted my bedroom makeover and how they found me. Back when I was an Insta-baby I was told you should always have some sort of contact info in your profile. To make it easier for businesses to contact you for collaborations and that type of thing. Best advice I have been given so far and it worked!
In April I was reading through my emails and saw one titled “Inquiry-Country Living Magazine”, I figured it was someone just trying to sell me a subscription. I kind of had a heart attack when I read they had seen my bedroom on Instagram and wanted to include it in an upcoming issue! It took seconds for me to reply with “Are you kidding me? Yes please!” As soon as I hit send I panicked. What if it was a prank or a scam? I told a couple friends but kept it on the down low just in case.
Over the next couple months I received emails from several different people from Hearst Magazine. I am not even kidding when I tell you I still swore it was a scam. They asked for quite a lot of personal info about myself and my family. Even my dogs name! I sent the info but only after checking the names with the employee lists! I know I sound crazy but it’s really not my fault! My husband had helped me search for a home online once and unknowingly sent our family info to a scam artist in Nigeria….. My paranoia was totally justified.
After that it was really just a wait and see type of thing. I mean these editors are busy people. They didn’t have time to reassure me weekly that everything was still good to go. I certainly didn’t want to constantly email and look like the overly excited…. never been in a magazine before… I bet you regret contacting me…. just file me under crazy kind of girl. Even though I totally was.
Happy to be among friends
Fast forward to the third week of June when I found out this issue is a special issue dedicated to the readers and would also include several of my friends! Yvonne @paintedplanks, Lauren @mrslaurenash Patsy @blessedmommatobabygirls and Cynthia @harperandarrowmarketplace. How cool is that? To be able to share the excitement with some amazing ladies made it even better! You can to visit them all on Instagram too!
The day finally came that Yvonne sent me a text telling me it was available in the store near us! ( we live in neighboring subdivisions but met through Instagram. Crazy right?!) I grabbed my keys and my 10 year old son and bolted out the door.
We got to the store and I was feeling weirdly nervous. Like I was almost scared to look! When I found the magazine and opened it to the page with the photo my son just stood there and got this big smile on his face. He didn’t say anything but kept looking at the opened page and then back at me. I asked him why he was shocked? I had told him I was in there after all. He said “Its pretty cool to be your son. You’re in a magazine but at home you do wrestling moves in the living room and play Mario with me!” I thanked him for being proud of me and grabbed all 5 copies they had left. 🙂
A big Thank you to Natalie and Jen at the magazine for being so sweet and for giving me some excitement in my ordinary little life!
